Taking the back from a far side head and arm part 1

I can’t think of a better technique in all of MMA/BJJ/Sub Grappling than taking the back—and subsequently finishing the rear-naked-choke. Here, I show a common way I like to take the back. Most people try to roll over the head or across the hip, which are both good options for the back, but I find that standing people up and pulling them backwards is both less strenuous, and catches my opponents off guard—making the entire process easier for me to break down their posture and slide my hooks in.

The biggest details to focus on for this technique is to make sure you aren’t trying to get all the way around your opponent (it takes too long, and your opp will move before you can execute this), then making sure you really lift (like you would if you were deadlifting/performing floor cleans), and then ensuring your hook is in prior to your hips hitting the mats. If your opponent’s hips hit before your hook is in, he/she will most likely escape before you can secure position.

I have recorded a few different back takes already from the referees/turtle position as well as some back takes when I have someone in side control (I’m in top position), and I will release them over the next couple of weeks. I am also planning on showing a couple details on how to finish the rear naked choke and a modification of the “short choke” when the rear naked isn’t viable.

So, tune in, and if you have questions, please feel free to ask. IG limits the video to 1 minute, so details are limited due to time restraints. Also, if you want to see any other moves, please let me know.
